Transfers: Manchester City FC have the most expensive squad in the European Top 5 in 2022-23 (CIES)

Manchester City FC (Premier League) is the European Top 5 club to have invested the most to build its 2022-23 squad with €1.06bn spent on transfer fees, according to the CIES Football Observatory in its Weekly Post published on 05/09/2022. The report ranks the 98 clubs in the European Top 5 leagues according to the cost of their squad for the current season.

The 2021-22 English champions are in first place for the third consecutive season. They rank ahead of two other English clubs on the podium: Manchester United FC (€1bn) and Chelsea FC (€881m). Paris Saint-Germain (Ligue 1 Uber Eats), third in 2021-22, is fourth at €847m.

Champions League finalists Liverpool FC (Premier League) and winners Real Madrid CF (LaLiga Santander) are ranked 5^th and 6^th respectively, with €777m in transfer fees spent to compose their squad for the Merseyside club and €721m for the Madrid club.
