"The football world is in a state of shock following the tragic incidents that have taken place in Indonesia at the end of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium (located in Malang, on the island of Java)," declared Gianni Infantino (ITA/SUI), president of FIFA, on 02/10/2022.

At least 125 dead (including 32 children) and nearly 300 injured, is the provisional toll (as of 03/10/2022) of the tragedy that occurred at the end of the Indonesian league match, Arema FC - Persebaya Surabaya (2-3), on 01/10/2022. Angered by their team's defeat, around 3,000 Arema fans stormed the pitch, a situation to which the Indonesian police (who recorded at least two casualties) responded with tear gas, leading to a crowd surge in which many people were trampled and suffocated. The last time such a tragedy occurred at a stadium was in 2001, when 127 spectators died and around 100 were injured in a Ghanaian championship match at the Accra Sports Stadium.
