Cyprus: Joseph Blatter condemns the bomb attack at the Cyrpus referees headquarters

A bomb exploded in the offices of the Cyprus Association of arbitrators, the 10/13/2014 at 3:30 am. No one has been hurt. Hooligans were behind the attack, according to several Cypriot media outlets.

"I would like join in expressing my condemnation of the cowardly bomb attack carried out at the headquarters of the Cyprus Referees Association," said Joseph Blatter, president of FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), in a letter to Costakis Koutsokoumnis, president of the CFA (Cyprus Football Association) on 13/10/2014.

  • An earlier bomb blast blew up the car of Leontios Trattos, president of the Cyprus Association of Referees, on 28/02/2014.
  • Cypriot federation postponed the matches of the national first division on 29 and 30/02/2014 following the attack.

"Essential that (referees) are afforded the necessary respect and protection" (Joseph Blatter, president of FIFA)

  • "Match officials have one of the most challenging jobs in football and it is essential that they are afforded the necessary respect and protection by both the football community and the police."
