Netflix: unsuccessful bids for sports media rights (including ATP) in Europe (press)

The streaming platform Netflix made offers to acquire the rights to stream the ATP tennis circuit in several European countries including France and the UK, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal on 08/11/2022.

No deal has yet been reached, but the platform also expressed interest in streaming rights to the WTA tennis circuit and cycling events in the UK, according to The Wall Street Journal. Netflix was also in talks to acquire the rights to the World Surf League in late 2021, however no deal was ever reached. The platform is reportedly considering investing in leagues and competitions with lower broadcasting rights costs than major competitions, partly because of the rising cost of sports media rights, according to The Wall Street Journal.

"We're not quite so sure we can significantly increase our profit stream by adding (live) sports.
