Liverpool FC: 2,500 additional rail seats to be installed at Anfield by January 2023

Liverpool FC (Premier League) will install an additional 2,500 rail seats at Anfield (53,394 capacity) during the stadium's new expansion phase planned during the winter break, announced the club on 30/11/2022.

Standing had been banned in the UK since 1989 when legislation was introduced following the Hillsborough disaster on 15/04/1989, when 96 spectators (97 in total after Andrew Stanley Devine died "as a result of the life-changing injuries he sustained during the tragedy") were killed during a crowd surge at a match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at the Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield (UK). The 'rail seating system' is a process that allows seats to be locked in the upright position during matches - thus providing de facto standing room - or lowered to make them into conventional seats.

The installation, for which the supporters' board has been consulted, will bring the total number of rail seats at Anfield to 10,300, as 7,800 were installed in the summer of 2021 (1,800 in the Kop, 6,000 in the Anfield Road stand) during a trial conducted with the Sports Grounds Safety…
