Premier League: WhaleFin (crypto) expected to end sleeve sponsorship deal with Chelsea FC (press)

WhaleFin, a cryptocurrency trading platform owned by Amber Group (SGP), is expected to abandon its sleeve sponsorship deal with Chelsea FC (Premier League), according to press reports on 09/12/2022. The deal is valued at £20m (€23.3m) per season, making it the most lucrative sleeve sponsorship deal in the European Top 5 in 2022-23.

The platform has featured on the English club's shirt sleeves since the start of the 2022-23 season, as part of an agreement made official on 12/05/2022. This was Chelsea's first partnership with a crypto-asset operator. Like many companies in the sector, Amber Group is reviewing its operations following the bankruptcy of the FTX platform, which was liquidated on 11/11/2022: the Singapore-based company is reportedly considering laying off 300 people and ceasing its retail operations, according to the US business and financial news website Bloomberg. The end of the Chelsea deal would also be part of this process.
