CJEU/Super League: "We will continue to fight for the current model of European football" (J. Tebas)

"We, LaLiga and the other European leagues, will continue to fight for the European institutions to legislate and provide legal protection for the current model of European football," said Javier Tebas, LaLiga president, on 15/12/2022.

Tebas was reacting to the conclusions of Athanasios Rantos, Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), earlier today regarding the Super League project promoted by several European clubs: "The FIFA-UEFA rules under which any new competition is subject to prior approval are compatible with EU competition law."

"The Advocate General states that although the European Super League Company (ESLC) is free to create its own football competition outside of the FIFA and UEFA ecosystem, clubs involved cannot expect to participate at the same time in competitions organised by FIFA and UEFA," said the Spanish league, which joins UEFA, FIFA and the ECA among the bodies that have welcomed Athanasios Rantos' findings.
