Qatar 2022: Argentina crowned world champions for the 3^rd time

Argentina won the 22^nd edition of the World Cup by beating France in the final (3-3 after extra time, 4-2 on penalties) at the Lusail Stadium in Doha (QAT) on Sunday 18/12/2022. 

This is the third World Cup won by the Albiceleste after the 1978 edition held in their country (3-1 victory after extra time versus the Netherlands, on 25/06/1978) and the 1986 edition played in Mexico (3-2 victory versus West Germany, on 29/06/1986). Only three nations have won more: Brazil (5), Germany and Italy (4).

It is also the first world trophy won by a South American team since the 2002 World Cup, which saw Brazil beat Germany (2-0, 30/06/2002). The last four World Cups have been won by European nations: Italy (2006), Spain (2010), Germany (2014) and France in 2018. 

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) will receive $42m (€39.9m) from FIFA, plus an additional $1.5m (€1.4m) in "preparation costs" (a fixed amount paid to each of the 32 national federations that qualified for the World Cup finals).
