The Italian government has approved amendments to the Melandri law (2008) that aim to extend the maximum duration of broadcasting rights contracts in Italy for sports competitions from three to five years, according to the Italian business daily Milano Finanza on 17/12/2022 as well as other media. These changes must now be validated by the Senate.

Two amendments to the law had been presented by three senators from the political party Forza Italia (including Claudio Lotito, president of SS Lazio, Serie A TIM) and Daniele Manca, member of the Democratic Party, according to the Italian press on 04/12/2022.

The changes to the Melandri law could apply to the current Serie A TIM TV rights cycle (2021-2024). This would allow the OTT platform DAZN and pay-TV operator Sky Italia, broadcasters of the Italian championship during this period, to extend their Serie A TV rights by a maximum of two years and thus broadcast the competition until the end of the 2025-26 season.
