Tokyo 2020: the Olympics cost 20% (€2bn) more than the amount announced by organisers

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games (held in 2021) cost ¥1,699bn (€12.1bn at current exchange rates), up 20% from the ¥1,423.8bn (€10.1bn) announced by the organisers in June 2022, said the Japanese equivalent of the Court of Auditors in a report published on 22/12/2022

In the document, the Court states that the organisers had "wrongly omitted to include certain government expenses related to the Olympics," including "anti-doping measures, athletes' training, Japanese food at the Olympic Village and the new Olympic Stadium." The administrative court urges the government to "disclose (in the future) the total costs in a timely manner when it is substantially involved in a major event."
