Brazil: CBF "disapproves of the use of the national team's shirt for anti-democratic acts"

"The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) vehemently disapproves of the use of the national team's shirt for anti-democratic acts and vandalism," said the Confederação Brasileira de Futebol on 09/01/2023.

The announcement follows the invasion of three Brazilian institutional locations in the capital Brasilia's Three Powers Square, the Planalto Presidential Palace, the Supremo Tribunal Federal (Brazilian Supreme Court) and the National Congress, by demonstrators, many of whom were wearing national team shirts, on Sunday 08/01/2023. An action carried out by supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro, two and a half months after the election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (known as "Lula") as the country's president on 30/10/2022.

"The Brazilian national team shirt is a symbol of the joy of our people. To wear it is to cheer, vibrate and love the country. The CBF is a non-partisan and democratic entity. We encourage that the shirt be used to unite and not to separate Brazilians," added the body, holder of five World Cup titles (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002).
