Transfer fees paid by clubs during the two transfer periods of 2022-23 (summer 2022 and January 2023) reached €9.12bn. This is the second highest total after the 2019-20 season (€9.7bn), according to the CIES Football Observatory in its monthly report entitled "Inflation in the football players' transfer market", published on 20/02/2023.

"The sums involved in the transfer of players by professional football clubs worldwide has strongly increased over the past decade. The total of about €9bn measured for the 2022-23 season is the second highest since the record 2019-20 season. The rebound seen in 2021-22 after the strong drop noted in 2020-21 has therefore continued during the current season, with even a new record for a winter transfer window in January 2023," explained the report.

Other notable figures include:
• In 2022-23, English clubs' spending in the transfer market accounted for 40.2% of the total, compared to an average of 25.4% between 2013-14 and 2019-20.
• Bonus payments now exceed 15% of total payments.
• Player prices have increased at an annual rate of 9% since 2013-14…
