While Vladimir Putin and Russia waited until the end of the Winter Olympics in Beijing (CHN) on 20/02/2022 before launching the war in Ukraine four days later, on Thursday 24/02/2022, Thomas Bach (GER), president of the International Olympic Committee, accused Moscow of having violated the Olympic truce.

On 02/12/2021, 193 UN member states had adopted a resolution calling for a truce to be observed for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing from 28/01 to 20/03/2022, i.e. from seven days before the start of the Olympic Games until seven days after the end of the Paralympic Games.

Chronologically, this is the first link between the Russian-led war in Ukraine and the world of sport. But it is far from the only one.

Hence, four days after the invasion of Ukrainian territory, FIFA and UEFA published a joint statement on 28/02/2022 announcing the exclusion of all Russian teams and national teams from international competitions, thus applying the IOC's recommendations. The same day, UEFA announced that it was ending its partnership with Gazprom, a Russian gas and electricity supplier.
