Death of Just Fontaine (FRA, 1933-2023), record goalscorer at a single World Cup in 1958

Just Fontaine, former French international (21 caps, 30 goals) born on 18/08/1933 in Marrakech (MAR), died in Toulouse (Haute-Garonne) on Wednesday 01/03/2023.

Just Fontaine scored a record number of goals in a single World Cup (13 in 1958 in Sweden) and played for three clubs during his playing career: US Marocaine, OGC Nice (French champions in 1956) and Stade de Reims (French champions in 1958, 1960 and 1962). He was coach of the French team (1967) and much later of the Moroccan team (1979-1981) and was also one of the founders of the UNFP in 1961.

"Many tributes are planned to honour the death of a legend of world football. On the FFF's initiative, his memory will be saluted this weekend by a minute's silence on all pitches in France. It will begin today (01/03/2023) in Toulouse, Marseille and Nantes, before the kick-off of the last three quarter-finals of the Coupe de France," said the Fédération Française de Football (FFF).
