NHL / USA: Rangers - Capitals broadcast in cartoon format on Disney and ESPN+ on 15/03/2023

New York Rangers - Washington Capitals (5-3), a 2022-23 NHL regular season game, was broadcast live in a "Big City Green" (an American cartoon) format on the TV channels Disney Channel and Disney XD, as well as on the Disney+ and ESPN+ platforms (both property of the US entertainment and media conglomorate The Walt Disney Company) in the United States, on 15/03/2023 (kick-off at 19:00 EST). The game was also available via classic broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+.

The game broadcast included live, real-time animation of both teams' players, who were modelled after the cartoon characters. The broadcast used positioning data provided by the NHL Edge innovation centre, including a puck and player tracking system, to recreate the game action.

This initiative, aimed at "creating entirely new fan experiences for a younger audience," was developed in collaboration with NHL Edge as well as the ESPN Edge Innovation Center, the AI-based data analytics and visualisation company Beyond Sports and the real-time animation and virtual production studio Silver Spoon.
