Belgium: "A total ban on gambling advertising will weaken the sports sector" (joint statement)

"A total ban on gambling advertising will undoubtedly weaken the Belgian sports sector. As organisers of major sporting events and top competitions, we lose financial power. This affects not only our clubs or teams, but also the fans. The way forward is a sound legal framework for sports betting, including clear agreements on its promotion," stated the heads of seven Belgian professional sports organisations, including the Pro League, in a joint statement published on 23/03/2023.

This statement follows the publication, on 08/03/2023, of a Royal Decree banning advertising for gambling, including sports betting and online casino operators, in Belgian stadiums (banners, posters, signage and advertising spots) from 01/01/2025, and on the shirts of professional clubs from 01/01/2028.
• During a transitional period between these two dates, the display of such sponsors on shirts will be authorised excluding on the front, without slogans and on a maximum surface area of 75 cm² (7.5 cm x 10 cm).
