Newcastle United: safe standing to be installed at St James' Park at the start of the 2023-24 season

Newcastle United FC (Premier League) will install safe standing at St James' Park (52,305 capacity) "as part of an initial trial period at the start of the 2023-24 season," announced the club on 27/03/2023.

"A designated licensed standing section with space for approximately 1,800 home supporters will be installed in the South East Corner of the stadium and will include the lower section of block B and the upper sections of blocks C, D, E and F. A similar provision will also be installed for visiting supporters on Level 7 of the Leazes End," explained the club.

Standing room had been banned in the UK since 1989 when a law was introduced following the Hillsborough disaster on 15/04/1989, when 96 fans died in a crowd surge during a match between Liverpool FC and Nottingham Forest FC at Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield (ENG).
