UK: DAZN bids for EFL competitions media rights from 2024-25 with the end of TV blackout (press)

The OTT sports platform DAZN has reportedly made an offer to acquire UK media rights to the EFL competitions (Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One, Sky Bet League Two) from the 2024-25 season onwards, according to several British media reports on 29/03/2023.

DAZN would like to broadcast all the matches of these competitions and would therefore ask for the lifting of the TV blackout, according to the British media. The blackout prohibits the broadcasting of live matches in England on Saturdays between 14:45 and 17:15 (15:45 and 18:15 CET) and applies to all matches that kick off within this two-and-a-half hour window, in order to protect attendance at stadiums.

The EFL would like to sell the rights for £200m (€227m) a year, while the pay-TV operator Sky currently pays £119m (€135m) per season for the rights over the 2019-2024 cycle. Sky, the pay-TV package BT Sport and the streaming platform Viaplay are also said to be among the bidders for the rights to broadcast EFL competitions from 2024-25 in the UK.
