EFL: exclusive negotiations with Sky for the extension of its TV rights in the United Kingdom

The English Football League is set to enter "an exclusive month long negotiating period" with the pay-TV operator Sky for the renewal of its broadcasting rights to EFL competitions (Sky Bet Championship, Sky Bet League One, Sky Bet League Two and Carabao Cup) in the UK from 2024-25, announced the EFL 03/04/2023.

The EFL would like to sell the rights for £200m (€228m) a year, according to several British media on 29/032023. Sky is currently paying £119m (€135m) per season over the 2019-2024 cycle for these rights, up 35% compared to the 2015-2019 cycle.

DAZN had also submitted an offer according to British media. The OTT platform wanted to broadcast all the matches of these competitions and therefore asked for the lifting of the TV blackout, which prohibits the broadcasting of live matches in England on Saturdays between 14:45 and 17:15 (15:45 and 18:15 CET) and applies to all matches that kick off within this two-and-a-half hour window, in order to protect attendance at stadiums.
