2022-23 Sky Bet Championship: Burnley FC promoted to the Premier League, one year after relegation

Burnley FC, top of the 2022-23 Sky Bet Championship with a 19 points-lead over third placed Luton Town with five games to go, are guaranteed to finish the year in one of the top two spots in the table and thus be promoted to the Premier League without going through the playoffs, following their 2-1 win over 4^th placed Middlesbrough FC on 07/04/2023. Relegated to the second division at the end of the 2021-22 season, Burnley are returning to the top flight after only one season.

Burnley has been 84% owned by Velocity Sports Partners, the sports investment arm of US-based ALK Capital, since 31/12/2020. The transaction was valued at around £168m (€186m) according to English media. Following the acquisition, British-American Alan Pace, the former CEO of Real Salt Lake (MLS) and managing partner of ALK Capital, replaced Mick Garlick as chairman of the club.
