France/Refereeing: "Implementation of VAR in Ligue 2 BKT for 2024-25 season" (S. Lannoy)

"The object (of the meeting organised between the LFP and the Technical Direction of Refereeing) is the implementation of video assistance in the Ligue 2 BKT for the 2024-25 season," announced Stéphane Lannoy, technical director in charge of professional refereeing at the Fédération Française de Football, on the pay-TV channel beIN Sports, on 17/04/2023.

In order to introduce VAR at the level of the French second division, "there are specifications to be respected and we need to train enough referees to meet the needs of the Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Ligue 2. 2024-25 gives us a full year to train new video assistant referees," explained the former professional referee.

Video assistant refereeing (VAR) is therefore set to make its debut in Ligue 2 six years after its widespread use in Ligue 1 dating back to 2018-19. The 2.Bundesliga was the first European Top 5 second division to introduce VAR, in 2019-20.
