Five European countries (Italy, England, Spain, the Netherlands and Scotland) have a national museum dedicated to football as of 24/09/2014. Built between 2000 and 2014, most museums are not located near a sporting venue, except the one of Scottish football, which is installed inside Hampden Park (Glasgow, Scotland).

The Museum of the DFB (Deutscher Fußball-Bund, the German Football Federation) will be inaugurated in the first half 2015 in Dortmund (GER). The sports equipment brand adidas, Sparkasse bank and the automaker Mercedes-Benz are partners in this museum project. The cost is estimated at €36m. €17.5m will be invested by the DFB and €18.5m by the North Rhine - Westphalia region.
