Espai Barça: "The most important institutional project in FC Barcelona's history" (J. Laporta)

The financing agreement for Espai Barça, a major project to modernise the club's infrastructure, is "the most important institutional project in the club's history," said Joan Laporta, president of FC Barcelona (LaLiga Santander) during a press conference held on 27/04/2023 to give further details of the operation announced three days earlier, which brings together 20 investors for a total of €1.450bn lent to Barça.

Initially valued at €600m in 2014 under the presidency of Josep Maria Bartomeu, the Espai Barça project had been the subject of an update presented by the new management on 17/10/2021, with a budget revised upwards to €1.5bn (+150%). In an online referendum held on 19/12/2021, Joan Laporta then obtained a favourable vote from socios in order to obtain full power for the club "to implement whatever actions it deems necessary or convenient to procure funding for the Espai Barça project, which under no circumstances may be greater than €1.5bn."
