USA/Formula 1: a record 1.79 million viewers for the Monaco Grand Prix on ABC

The Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix, the sixth of the 2023 season (following the cancellation of the Chinese and Emilia Romagna Grands Prix), drew an average of 1.79 million viewers on the free channel ABC belonging to the American TV group ESPN (The Walt Disney Company) in the United States on Sunday 28/05/2023 (race start at 09:00 ET, 15:00 CET).

This is the best audience for a broadcast of the Monaco Grand Prix in the United States, and the third highest audience for a Formula 1 GP in this territory (behind the Miami 2023 and 2022 GPs). It was also the first time the race had been broadcast free-to-air on ABC, having previously been shown on ESPN's pay-TV channels.

The Walt Disney Company, parent company of ESPN, extended its exclusive rights to broadcast Formula 1 in its entirety in the United States for an additional three seasons (2023-2025) on 22/10/2022. ESPN has been broadcasting F1 since 2018. Disney has extended the rights for between $75m and $90m (€68.3m and €82m) per season, according to US media reports.
