Technology: 69% of fans prefer to watch sport outside of sports venues (Capgemini report)

• 69% of fans prefer to watch sport outside of sports venues.
• 70% of fans prefer to watch matches on their smartphone in 2023, compared with 40% in 2019 (rising to 77% among fans aged 18 to 43 in 2023).
• 64% of fans prefer to follow matches on social networks.
• The proportion of fans who visited sports arenas at least once during the year fell from 80% in 2019 to 37% in 2023.
• 67% of fans are disappointed that the teams/players they follow do not place enough importance on environmental sustainability.
• 60% of fans are interested in the possibility of attending matches, events and socialising virtually using the metaverse or buying digital collectibles via a blockchain (NFTs).

These are the main findings of the report "A whole new ball game: Why sports tech is a game changer", carried out by Capgemini Research Institute and published on 06/06/2023. The study surveyed 12,000 sports fans over the age of 18 in 11 countries between March and April 2023.
