European Top 5 attendance: an average of 32,597 spectators per match & fill rate of 86.5% in 2022-23

The 98 clubs that competed in the European Top 5 leagues during the 2022-23 season posted an average attendance of 32,597 spectators per match, up 30.6% from 2021-22 (24,952 per match) and up 4.4% from 2019-20 (31,224), the last year to be played in its entirety without any stadium capacity limits. The average stadium fill rate reached 86.48% in 2022-23, compared to 65.1% in 2021-22 and 80% in 2018-19.

No restrictions on the number of fans at sports venues were implemented by authorities in the European Top 5 countries in 2022-23, whereas the Premier League was the only one to be exempted from capacity limits or matches played behind closed doors in 2021-22.

The German league, which was the most affected by the health crisis in 2021-22, posted the biggest increase in average attendance from 2021-22 (+104%), with an average of 42,967 spectators, ahead of the Premier League (40,267, +0.8%), LaLiga Santander (29,575, +28.7%), Serie A TIM (29,386, +60.9%) and Ligue 1 Uber Eats (23,810, +16%). The 2022-23 season saw record stadium attendance levels in the English, Spanish and French…
