The importance of protecting intellectual property and audiovisual rights at the EU level was the main issue addressed by Frederic Thiriez, president of the EPFL (Association of European Professional Football Leagues), during the meeting with the Hungarian Tibor Navracsics, the new European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport in Milan (ITA) on 02/12/2014, at the European Sports Forum.

The EPFL explained to the successor of the Cypriot Androulla Vassiliou that European leagues "rely on intellectual property and especially copyright law to sell rights and create income that can be reinvested in the game. Being able to exploit commercially their competitions and to protect them against any infringements in their respective territories is the key to a sustainable financing of both professional and grassroots sports," said the association of the professional leagues.
