The format of the League of Nations is on the agenda of the last meeting of 2014 of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), scheduled at the House of European Football in Nyon (SUI) on 04/12/2014, under the chairmanship of Michel Platini.

The launch of a Nations League, from 2018, was adopted by the 54 member associations of the European body at the end of its annual conference in Astana (KAZ) on 27/03/2014. The competition will feature promotion and relegation between groups, will see a winning team every odd year and will replace most international friendlies.

The League of Nations: 4 divisions with the top 16 teams in  in Division A, and further divided into 4 groups of 4

  • The 54 national teams will be divided into four divisions, based on their UEFA coefficient number.
  • Each division will have four groups of three or four teams.
  • Each team will play 4 or 6 matches between September and November 2018.
  • The 16 best teams in Europe would be divided into four groups of four (Division A).
  • The top seeds have already been identified: Spain, Germany, Netherlands, Italy…
