UEFA: the Executive Committee sets the format of the Nations League, 16 groups of 3 or 4 teams

The format of the Nations League and European qualifiers for the 2018-2022 cycle were approved at the last meeting in 2014 of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations) Executive Committee at the House of European Football in Nyon (SUI) on 04/12/2014.

The main phase of the Nations League will be played on six matchdays of competition, between September and November 2018. The 54 UEFA member nations will be divided into four divisions (A, B, C and D) according to their coefficient UEFA at the end of the World Cup qualifying 2018. Each division will have four groups of three or four teams.

A relegation / promotion system will be set up at the end of the main phase, and the four group winners of Division A will play a final tournament in June 2019, to determine the winner of the first Nations League.

  • The Nations League, a new competition for national teams, will replace most of friendly matches between European national teams.
  • The principle of the Nations League was adopted by the 54 member associations of UEFA at its congress in Astana (KAZ) on 27/03/2014.
