Canal+: acquisition of a 12% stake in the Swedish audiovisual group Viaplay

"The Canal+ group, a leading pay-TV player present in Europe, Africa and Asia, announces its acquisition of a 12% stake in the Viaplay group, the pay-TV leader in the Nordic countries", he said on 07/20/2023.

This announcement comes on the same day that Jorgen Madsen Lindemann (CEO of Viaplay) announced that 25% of the Swedish audiovisual group's workforce (around 450 people, according to specialised media) had been made redundant due to poor financial performance.

Viaplay posted a net loss of SEK5.89bn (€512m) in the second quarter of its financial year 2023. The Swedish group had posted a net profit of SEK175m (€15.2m) for the same period in 2022.

"We are conducting an immediate strategic review of the entire business to consider all options including content sublicensing, asset disposals, equity injections or the sale of the whole Group," said Jorgen Madsen Lindemann a few hours before the Canal+ announcement.
