Winners of the Women's World Cup 2019 in France and quadruple world champions (1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019), the United States face the Netherlands, also finalists of the previous edition (their best run in the competition), on Matchday 2 of Group E of the Women's World Cup 2023, at the Wellington Regional Stadium (Wellington, New Zealand), on Thursday 27/07/2023 (kick-off at 15:00 CET).

US Soccer posted a turnover of $119.7m (€109m) in 2021-22 and has 4.2 million licensed players, while the Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond (KNVB) generated a turnover of €106m in 2020 and recorded 1.19 million licensees in 2021-22. In addition, the 22 matches of the US Women National Team (USWNT) generated $13.1m (€11.7 million) in revenue in 2021-22. Nike (USA) is the equipment supplier for both national teams.

US Soccer was the first federation in the world to set equal amounts for the men's and women's national teams for FIFA World Cup bonuses, in May 2022. A measure that was also taken by the KNVB in June 2022.
