Ligue 1/TV rights: LFP favours a 5-year contract instead of 4 from 2024-25 (press)

The Ligue de Football Professionnel would like to see the duration of broadcasting rights contracts in France for Ligue 1 Uber Eats extended from four to five years for the cycle starting in 2024-25, according to the French sports daily L'Équipe on 28/07/2023.

This change requires a decree from the Ministry of Sport. The matter is currently being examined by the French Competition Authority before being referred to the Council of State. The next call for tenders is due to be launched by the LFP on 12/09/2023.

This extension would have a number of advantages, according to the LFP, as reported by L'Équipe:
• It would give broadcasters more time to make their investment profitable
• Encourage the arrival of new players and therefore stimulate competition
• Improve clarity for the end consumer and avoid regular subscription changes
• Reduce the risk of piracy
• Improve financial visibility for the clubs and the entire ecosystem
• Preserve the competitiveness of Ligue 1.
