Viaplay: PPF (Czech Republic) acquires 6.3% of the Swedish audiovisual group's capital (press)

The Czech investment group PPF has acquired a 6.3% stake in the Swedish audiovisual group Viaplay, according to the US financial news website Bloomberg on 28/07/2023.

Jorgen Madsen Lindemann (CEO of Viaplay) had announced the redundancy of 25% of the Swedish media group's workforce (around 450 people, according to the specialist press) due to poor financial performance on 20/07/2023. The French pay-TV and free-to-air group Canal+ announced that it was acquiring 12% of Viaplay a few hours later the same day.

Viaplay posted a net loss of SEK5.89bn (€512m) in the second quarter of its 2023 financial year. This compares with a net profit of SEK175m (€15.2m) for the same period in 2022.

"We are conducting an immediate strategic review of the entire business to consider all options including content sublicensing, asset disposals, equity injections or the sale of the whole Group," said Jorgen Madsen Lindemann on 20/07/2023.
