ReportCalcio 2023: €1.4bn net loss for Italian pro clubs in 2021-22, the worst result in 15 years

For the 15 years analysed by ReportCalcio (2007-08 to 2021-22), the overall deficit for Italian professional football amounts to €7.7bn. The loss recorded in 2021-22, close to €1.4bn, is the worst net result over the reference period, according to "ReportCalcio 2023" the 13th edition of the annual report on Italian and international football compiled by the FIGC Study Centre in collaboration with AREL (Agency for Research and Legislation) and PwC Italia (PricewaterhouseCoopers), published on 03/08/2023.

Among the other key findings from this annual report:
⚽️ An increase of 210,000 players in one year (1.04 million in 2021-22, up 24.9% on 2020-21) and a return to pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels
⚽️ The socio-economic impact of football on the country is estimated at over €4.5bn
⚽️ Good results for the national youth teams, as evidenced by the U20s (2023 World Cup finalists) and U19s (2023 European champions) and the FIGC's third place in Europe in terms of commercial revenue from national teams
⚽️ The increasingly urgent need to initiate a recovery plan to build a new generation of stadiums…
