Italy: San Siro (Milan) will not be destroyed, but saved due to "requirements of cultural interest"

"The Lombardy Regional Commission for Cultural Heritage officially approves (unanimously) the proposal of the Superintendency (the Ministry of Culture's decentralised body for archaeology, fine arts and landscapes), according to which the 'requirements of cultural interest' that will come into force in 2025 are met with regard to the second ring of the San Siro Stadium (Stadio Giuseppe-Meazza), meaning that the stadium cannot be demolished," announced the Lombardy body on 09/08/2023.

AC Milan and FC Inter Milan (Serie A TIM) presented a project on 10/07/2019 to build a major sports complex, including a 60,000-seat stadium, in the San Siro district to the west of Milan. The project, due for completion in 2027-2028, involved demolishing the Stadio Giuseppe-Meazza (80,000 capacity), a stadium owned by the city of Milan and shared by the two clubs, which had been completely renovated and extended (with a third ring) for the 1990 World Cup.
