"The Luis Rubiales affair is doing a lot of damage to football because people are not talking about the World Cup title won by the Spanish women's team (1-0 victory over England in the final at Stadium Australia in Sydney, Australia on 20/08/2023). We must try to minimise the damage and change the image that is being portrayed," declared Marcelino Maté, president of the Castile and León Football Federation (FCYLF, for the region of Valladolid and Salamanca in north-west Spain) on 29/08/2023.

Luis Rubiales, president of the RFEF, kissed striker Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth, against her will, as the Spanish women footballers were waving to the officials before the presentation of the trophy at the end of the World Cup final.

Marcelino Maté and the presidents of the RFEF's 18 other autonomous and territorial federations demanded that Luis Rubiales "present his resignation as president of the RFEF immediately" following "the recent events and the unacceptable examples of behaviour that have seriously damaged the image of Spanish football" at the end of a six-hour meeting held on…
