Germany: the Football Museum to recall the attack on Daniel Nivel during the 1998 World Cup

The German Football Museum, located in Dortmund (North Rhine-Westphalia, GER), in collaboration with the German Football Association (DFB), is commemorating the attack on French policeman Daniel Nivel by German hooligans in Lens (FRA) 25 years ago, on 21/06/1998, during the 1998 World Cup in France, announced the DFB on 04/09/2023.

Daniel Nivel, then aged 43, was brutally attacked on the outskirts of the Stade Félix-Bollaert (which became the Stade Bollaert-Delelis on 29/09/2012) after the Germany-Yugoslavia match (2-2, Group F). Daniel Nivel, who was in a coma for six weeks, lost the use of an eye and has since suffered from neurological and hearing problems that have prevented him from working.

Four of the assailants were sentenced to between three-and-a-half and 10 years in prison. The Daniel-Nivel Foundation was set up in 2000 with the aim of tackling violence, studying its underlying causes in football and helping the victims, according to the DFB.
