PFA/Premier League: creation of a fund for ex-players impacted by neurodegenerative conditions

"The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) have announced the creation of a new fund, supported by the Premier League, to assist former players, and their families, who have been impacted by dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions," announced the two bodies on 06/09/2023.

The fund has an initial amount of £1m (€1.17m as of 07/09/2023), pending the organisation of further charitable initiatives with "other football stakeholders".

"Former professional footballers who have been members of the PFA and have a diagnosed neurodegenerative disease, will be able to make applications for financial support. These will then be assessed by a newly established, independent panel," added the PFA and Premier League, who are bound by a new five-year agreement signed on 12/05/2023, which covers, in particular, the area of player welfare (see "futher reading" section).
