Italy: FIGC provides for the introduction of goal-line technology in the Serie A in 2015-16

The Federal Council of the FIGC (Federazione Italiana di Giuoco Calcio, Italian Football Federation) unanimously mandated Michele Uva, CEO of the federation, to form a working group to assess the possible introduction of goal-line technology in the Serie A TIM, on 17/12/2014.

"This is a subject to be studied, the FIGC has scheduled the installation of goal-line technology next season (2015-16)," said Carlo Tavecchio, president of the Italian Federation, after the Federal Council meeting. "The costs will be borne exclusively by the clubs," he added.

"We have planned a reduction of 8% in referee costs, or €4m (less) of the current €50m" (Carlo Tavecchio, president of the FIGC)

  • In Italy, the Serie A has used five referees (with two additional referees in the penalty areas) since 2012.
  • "For now, we are launching a process to implement the goal-line technology. In the course of the season which ends on 30/06/2015, we will decide whether to maintain the additional (2 penalty area) referees, given our economic means," said Carlo Tavecchio on 17/12/2014.
