UEFA: Belgium - Sweden stopped after the death of two Swedes shot dead by a terrorist in Brussels

Belgium - Sweden, a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying match (Group F) on Matchday 8 at the Stade Roi-Baudoin in Brussels, was suspended at half-time (the score was 1-1 at the time) due to a terrorist attack in the centre of the Belgian capital just under two hours before kick-off.

An assailant fired an automatic weapon at around 19:15 CET, wounding three people, including two Swedish supporters who were shot dead (the third, a taxi driver, is in a stable condition). "The Swedish nationality of the victims is cited as the probable motive for the attack," said a spokesperson for the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office later that evening. The terrorist, who claimed to be a member of the Islamic State in a video posted on social media, was wounded during his arrest and died on Tuesday 17/10/2023.

Once the match had stopped, spectators were asked to remain safely inside the stadium, which they were finally allowed to leave just before midnight.
