Basketball/NBA: a record €1.58bn in sponsorship revenues for the 2022-23 season

The National Basketball Association (NBA) and its franchises have generated a record $1.66bn (€1.58bn) in sponsorship revenues over the 2022-23 season, up 1.3% on 2021-22 ($1.64bn), according to data from the US agency IEG published on 16/10/2023.

This figure represents a less significant increase than the 12.5% growth in sponsorship revenues posted between the 2020-21 and 2021-22 financial years. This increase was mainly due to the addition of a large number of sponsors from the crypto-assets sector, who paid $130m (€133m) in 2021-22, compared with just $2m (€2.05m) in 2020-21.

Despite the early termination of both partnerships formed by cryptocurrency operator FTX, which filed for bankruptcy on 11/11/2022, with the Miami Heat (title sponsor of the arena) and the Golden State Warriors, the crypto-asset industry remains one of the most lucrative in the NBA. It is the third highest-spending sponsor category (between $100 and $150m, i.e. €95 and €142m), behind the technology industry ($190m / €180m) and the telecoms sector (between $100 and $150m).
