The Washington, D.C. City Council (USA) approved the project to build a stadium for the DC United MLS (Major League Soccer) franchise in the Buzzard Point neighborhood, southwest of the city centre, with a capacity of 20,000 to 25,000 seats, on 17/12/2014.

The franchise has played, since its creation in 1998, at the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium (capacity 46,000, historic stadium of the NFL Washington Redskins franchise). The Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir, also owner of FC Internazionale Milano (Serie A TIM), is the majority owner of DC United. The opening of the new stadium is planned for 2017. The project was designed by the British architectural firm Populous.

  • "The new stadium will be a major asset in the economic development of the District. DC United will soon announce the completion of a community benefits agreement that will serve as the basis for a lasting relationship between the team and the residents in the area in which the stadium will be built," stated the club on 17/12/2014.
