Liga BBVA: Telefonica acquires domestic TV rights of Celta de Vigo for 2015-16

The Spanish telecom group Telefonica has acquired the 2015-16 domestic TV of RC Celta de Vigo (Liga BBVA), announced the club on 27/12/2014. The domestic TV rights of Celta de Vigo were held by the audiovisual group Mediapro over the 2007-2012 period (for an amount estimated at €17m per season), and then by DTS (Canal+ Espana) when the club returned to La Liga in 2012- 13 (for an estimated amount of €23m per season).

The contract signed with Telefonica would be higher than the previous agreement with DTS, according to Spanish media. The 2015-16 home matches of Celta Vigo in La Liga (or Liga Adelante, if the club is relegated at the end of the 2014-15 season) and in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup) will be broadcast on Movistar Futbol, the thematic sports channel launched in September 2014 from the pay-TV platform Movistar TV.

  • Telefonica is currently competing with Mediapro to obtain the 2015-16 domestic TV rights FC Barcelona.
  • The centralised and collective marketing of domestic and international TV rights of the Liga BBVA and Liga Adelante will take effect in 2016-17.
