IFAB: sin bin trial in professional football & extended use of VAR proposed by the body

• Temporary dismissals or sin bins (an orange card/10 minutes based on the rugby model) "for dissent and specific tactical offences" (committed far from the goal to prevent a counter-attack, for example) should be tested at higher levels (among professionals), "following their successful implementation in grassroots football. Protocols and a system for trialling will now be developed."
• A possible extension of the use of VAR (free-kicks, corners, second yellow cards, etc.)

These were two of the recommendations made by the IFAB at its annual business meeting (ABM) at Heathrow, near London (ENG), chaired by Ian Maxwell, chief executive of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), on 28/11/2023.

This meeting on 28/11/2023 sets the agenda for the IFAB annual general meeting, scheduled to take place in Glasgow (SCO) on Saturday 02/03/2024, at which all proposed changes to the Laws of the Game will be considered for approval. Any approved amendments will become effective on 01/07/2024.
