Super League: "The FIFA and UEFA rules are contrary to European Union law" (CJEU)

"The FIFA and UEFA rules making any new interclub football project subject to their prior approval, such as the Super League, and prohibiting clubs and players from playing in those competitions, are unlawful. There is no framework for the FIFA and UEFA rules ensuring that they are transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate. They are contrary to competition law and the freedom to provide services," announced the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), which delivered its ruling on 21/12/2023 after receiving a reference for a preliminary ruling from the Juzgado de lo Mercantil (Madrid Commercial Court) in proceedings brought in Spain by the European Super League Company (ESLC), a company set up to develop the European Super League project.
