IOC: launch of a metaverse for the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games (KOR)

The International Olympic Committee is launching its first metaverse for the Gangwon 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG), to be held in South Korea from 19/01 to 01/02/2024, announced the IOC on 04/01/2024.

This virtual world, designed by the IOC in conjunction with the Gangwon 2024 YOG Organising Committee, Gangwon Province and with the support of the Korean Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology, offers users interactive experiences "helping to make Gangwon 2024 as inclusive and accessible as possible, particularly for young fans."

This metaverse, accessible via a dedicated platform offering automatic translation into six different languages (Korean, English, Spanish, French, Japanese and Chinese), will enable users to take their personalised digital avatar on a virtual tour of the nine venues involved in the YOG. Users will be able to take part in online challenges and mini-games involving ski jumping, bobsleigh and curling.
