"A legend of German and world football, Franz Beckenbauer has achievements and triumphs which are etched in history," said Gianni Infantino, FIFA president, on 08/01/2024, upon the announcement of the death the day before of Franz Beckenbauer. Former international defender (103 caps for the German team between 1965 and 1977).

"Famed for his elegant style of play, the footballing legend had established himself as one of the world's finest libero players, single-handedly reinventing this unique position in front of the defence. His imprint on German football will remain indelible, as he left such an indelible mark on the history of his country, both as a player and as a coach, amassing numerous titles during his career, mainly with Bayern Munich," said FIFA.

"His leadership qualities shone through as he captained both the national team and Bayern München during their most successful periods and continued to shine bright in his coaching career," said Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA.
