Germany: death of Franz Beckenbauer, world champion in 1974 (as a player) & 1990 (as a coach)

Franz Beckenbauer, former German international defender (103 caps between 1965 and 1977) and winner of the Ballon d'Or twice in 1972 and 1976, died on Sunday 07/01/2024 at the age of 78, according to German media on 08/01/2024.

His death comes just two days after that - on 05/01/2024 - of Brazilian Mario Zagallo, the only other person - along with France's Didier Deschamps - to have won the World Cup both as a player (in 1974) and as coach (1990).
