Snapchat: after raising funds of $485.6 million, the company valued at $10 billion

Snapchat, a mobile messaging and video/photo-sharing platform, raised $485.6m (about €403m) from 23 investors, according to documents filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), registered on 31/12/2014.

The identity of the new shareholders was not disclosed, but the IT companies Yahoo! Inc. and Amazon, as well as the venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byer, are included according to media outlets Le Figaro and Bloomberg on 01/01/2015. Snapchat is now valued at $10bn (€8.38bn).

  • Founded in 2011, Snapchat declined an acquisition offer from Facebook for $3bn (€2.51bn), on 13/11/2013. The company announced that it is working on the introduction of advertising into its application and hired Mike Randall (ex-Facebook employee) to manage advertising partnerships in June 2014.
  • Snapchat has established, on 17/11/2014, a partnership with Square Cash, who manages a solution to transfer money via email.
  • "Snapcash" allows, from the Snapchat interface, to send money to other Snapchat contacts, after recording the individuals' bank details from Square Cash.
