2.Bundesliga: death of Kay Bernstein, president of Hertha BSC, at just 43 years old

"Hertha BSC received the terrible news on Tuesday that president Kay Bernstein has passed away unexpectedly aged 43. The whole club, its governing bodies and staff members are shocked and deeply saddened by the news," announced Hertha BSC (2.Bundesliga) on 16/01/2024. The circumstances surrounding his death are not yet known.

Kay Bernstein, born on 30/09/1980, a former "capo" of Hertha's ultras and a self-described "child of the corner" ('ein Kind der Kurve'), succeeded Werner Gegenbauer as club president after receiving 1,670 votes (55.3% of the 3,016 votes cast) in the election held on 26/06/2022.

"It's a heavy burden to be the first to come out of the ultra generation and follow that path. But for me, supporting Hertha is above all else. But it's also about reaching out to the 1,300 members who didn't vote for me and saying: 'We take you seriously and hear your concerns, your reservations'," said Kay Bernstein at the time.
